Richmond Records Pool Profile:DJ Dragon words JAMES SMITH shutter COURTESY of RICHMOND RECORDS "I never thought of it as a profession, more like a hobby with fringe benefits." It's been almost two decades since Dragon picked up his first record. Playing the gauntlet of music over his career, Dragon has been fortunate enough to play and mix some of the best music in the world. From LL Cool J to The Cure, Depeche Mode to Grandmaster Flash, Dragon has been able to play music, non-exclusively to any style or genre. "Munich is still the best damn party place on the planet!" exclaims Dragon describing his ultimate gig at Deep Space in Germany. Between doing remixes for DJ X in Florida, DJ E in Germany, a working sponsorship for Peavey and EV, he is also a leader in the commercial sales department at AXE Music, a musical gear warehouse. Dragon finds the time to hold down a weekly residency at Y Afterhours every Friday night in Edmonton along with a bi-monthly residency at The Black Dog, a swanky lounge. "I love the music I play and I get music from all sorts of mediums." Dragon continues, "The Richmond Records Pool is a great outlet to receive new, hot music here in Canada. I get CDs and Vinyl from all over the world through the record pool. It helps a DJ find out what's going on in the rest of the world. Record labels and DJs tend to forget about the Canadian market." The Canadian market is definitely one that is overlooked, but we have some of the most talented musicians and DJs in the world. With open minded DJs like Dragon embracing new technology and utilizing old, it's no wonder he has been DJing for so long. "To me, it's about the music and not the media," he continues, "too many DJs are hung up on what format you play. The die-hard vinyl lovers remind me of guys who reminisce about how much fun high-school was." With his talents ranging across the musical spectrum, Dragon is best known for his DJ skills. His ability to mix and cross different genres of music have kept him fresh and even rare in a scene known for its scepticism. "We're all a bunch of nerds providing the sound track to people's lives." |
