TECHNO: Mixed by Damien Lazarus & Matthew Styles, Get Lost

crosstown rebels/intergroove

See the four shooters on the cover? Perhaps an artist’s rendering of the four shots of absinthe these guys slugged down before recording. More strange and bizarre minimal techno from the man who’s been the genre’s poster boy over the last year: Damien Lazarus. The founder of Crosstown Rebels has been busy touring the world after the success of his Rebel Futurism and Suck My Deck mixed compilations, and fulfilling his residencies at the Stink parties with Kompakt owner and A&R boss Michael Mayer in London and Ibiza. This two-CD set is mixed together by Damien and his label manager Matthew Styles Damien’s Bugged Out mix on CD 1 is sometimes funky, sometimes dark but always weird. CD 2 gets even stranger and more experimental, with broken beats, ambient soundscapes, trippy minimal electro and even a little hip hop action courtesy of Anaerobic Robots. As weird as it gets, it’s all very compelling. -T
