PUNK ALTERNATIVE: Sonic Youth, Rather Ripped |
|
Geffen Records And so Sonic Youth are back with their…what is it now…14th album? Whatever it is, Rather Ripped now concludes the band’s contractual obligation to Geffen Records. The New York City punk band formed in 1981, and to this day it still remains Thurston Moore on guitar and vocals, Lee Renaldo also on guitars, vocals and organ, the sexy Kim Gordon on bass guitar and Steve Shelley on drums. Sonic Youth pioneered the post-punk/indie rock way of life, and musically they’ve remained the same with a relatively clean analog sound with occasional bursts of distorted guitars, but no real use of sound effects to enhance their voices and instruments. Their poetic lyrics and melancholic melodies seem identical to what they were writing 20 years ago, which is a wonderful thing because Rather Ripped makes you feel like you’re listening to lost or forgotten recordings from the late ’80s or early ’90s. -CQ |
