Taking off pretty well right where he left off with Plat du Jour and Goodbye Swingtime, Matthew Herbert expands on big band jazz/swing by using a lot of vocals here on Scale, with the return of his colleague Dani Siciliano. There’s always splashes of his patented minimal house and techno in the background, but musically he’s matured to utilizing full orchestras with strings, brass and wind instruments. To combine these classic arrangements of swingtime jazz and big band with electronica is quite ingenious, and incorporate vocals that derive from ’50s lounge crooning to modern R&B, soul and hip hop. Scale is smooth and catchy, the closest he’s ever come to sounding like “popular” music, and should get him some radio play outside of the circles of jazz loyalists. -RA
