ELECTRONICA Atomic Hooligan You Are Here (Botchit and Scarper) Out from the Nu Skool of electronica, with visionaries like The Plump DJs, Audio Bullys, Lee Combs and Krafty Kuts, comes the brilliant debut album from Matt Welch and Terry Ryan, a.k.a. Atomic Hooligan. Crossover electronica that may have been spawned from the breaks movement, but along with their 9-piece band, they’ve managed to find something new—grinding, dirty, punk-alternative as so clearly established with songs like “Seven 10 Split,” “Head”, “Wait ’til You’re Sleeping” and “Spitball.” Unlike Richard Fearless’ total departure from electronica on Death In Vegas’ Scorpio Rising, You Are Here’s other songs still have strong elements of that massive Chemical Brothers sound. —AZ Mixed by Jojoflores Globe: La Collection (Madacy Entertainment/Fusion III) A double-mixed compilation that represents the vibe of Globe Restaurant in Montreal, a sophisticated and upscale resto-bar on the ever-so-trendy St-Laurent Boulevard, comes with a “Dinner” mix on disc one and a “Dance” mix on disc two. Jojoflores is not just a legend in Montreal, but a favourite in New York, Toronto, Miami, Chicago and even Singapore to name a few. Creator of Therapy Sessions, which has spawned nights more recently in Cape Town and Athens, and owner of Gotsoul Recordings, jojoflores does Globe justice with this compilation. The “Dinner” mix is a fine blend of soothing soul, jazzy deep house and funky r ’n’ b with selections by Roy Ayers, LAL, Michael Johnson and King Britt’s Sylk 130. The “Dance” mix is a little more bouncy, and is one of the best house sets of the year, with tracks by Mateo & Matos, Henrik Schwarz, Glenn Underground, Louie Vega’s remix of “Heart’s a Lonely Hunter” by Thievery Corporation featuring David Byrne, and jojo’s re-edit of the classic Earth People track, “Dance”. —AZ |
